Here are a some Driftaway Trip Tips before embarking on your Amsterdam adventure. An ice cold Heineken is surely a must!
PRE PURCHASE TICKETS
Popular tourist spots such as Heineken Brewery can get very busy. Try pre book tickets for any spare time activities or tours.
CARRY CARDS & CASH
There is a growing movement of cafes and restaurants going cashless – while some of the more older haunts like bruin cafés may not take cards at all.
MIND THE CYCLISTS
Cyclists in Amsterdam mean business. Never walk in a cycling lane or risk the wrath of an angry local. Always take a good look both ways before crossing!
WATCH OUT FOR PICKPOCKETS
The busy, compact downtown is the perfect recipe for thieves – especially in busy squares and visitor areas. Stay aware and don't keep all valuables on you.
TO TIP OR NOT TO TIP
Tipping is not expected in Amsterdam where hospitality workers receive a fair wage. You may want to top if service warrants it - 10% max.
CAREFUL AROUND CANALS
Almost none have barriers, and yes, drownings have happened (thankfully not on Driftaway). Canals are lined with busy bars & coffee shops so take care.
Personal travel insurance is not included in your trip package. Please ensure that you have this in place prior to leaving for your destination, although it is not obligatory. Driftaway Ltd will have tour operator insurance in place and all coach (or similar) transport we use are fully insured for European travel.
You have the opportunity to pay an initial deposit as well as having a longer period to split your payment instalments over which makes managing your funds that little bit easier.
The majority of our trips are only for 3 or 4 nights so please only bring the equivalent of hand luggage, especially if travelling via coach with us from the UK. Flights will of course be cheaper if you're only bringing hand luggage or a carry on bag instead of checked in luggage. Longer trips may require checked luggage but avoid taking it if you can.
Yes, we always try to build free time into all our trips so you can appreciate where we are at your own pace. Attending all our organised activities is not compulsory although highly advised to make the most of your trip experience.
The booking fee helps us cover the ticketing platforms cost of hosting our website and processing all purchases on our behalf as well as providing the functionality for deposits and payment instalments.
Yes, you'll need spending money for anything not included in the trip, for example, food throughout each day, drinks (including alcohol) and any activities or adventures you want to do during your free time. Unless heading to Morocco where you'll need more, we'd advise bringing a small amount of cash just in case.
You must adhere to the 90-day-visa-free limit if you are a British passport holder but at present, you do not require a visa for a short stay visit. You can find more information here: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/netherlands/entry-requirements
